Utilities need to develop networking technology strategies that enable existing applications to coexist efficiently with emerging packet-centric applications. Traditional SONET networks have served utilities reliably over the years, but they do not efficiently transport packet-based traffic. Packet optical networking platforms that support Connection-Oriented Ethernet, introduced in recent years, combine the best attributes of both SONET and packet-based architectures. These platforms enable a unified aggregation and transport infrastructure for upgrading and modernizing utility communications networks.
